A Long Lasting Solution to Missing & Damaged Teeth
Tooth loss is detrimental to your quality of life and overall health, making it harder to eat, speak, laugh and smile. Fortunately, advancements in dental restoration technology offer a permanent, functional solution to lost teeth. With dental implants, you’ll enjoy all the advantages of a full set of teeth and the confidence that comes with a complete smile.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are prosthetic replacements for lost or damaged teeth that look and act just like the real thing. Unlike dentures, they are permanently affixed to your jawbone and don’t need to be taken out for cleanings. Dental implants can provide you with a stunning, lifelong smile as long as you brush and floss twice a day and visit your dentist twice a year.
How Do Dental Implants Work?
Dental implants are composed of three parts:
- The Titanium Fixture
- The Abutment
- The Restoration
The fixture is the foundation of the restoration and is made of biocompatible titanium. The fixture is implanted in the jawbone where it fuses naturally with the bone tissue in a process called osseointegration. The abutment serves as the connector between the fixture and the restoration. Abutments allow the restoration to be attached securely to the fixture. The final part of a dental implant is the restoration, which might be a single crown or a bridge. The restoration is attached to the fixture by the abutment and serves as the replacement for lost or damaged teeth.
Dental restorations can be made of a variety of materials such as:
- Porcelain
- Gold
- Silver
- Resin
Porcelain has become an extremely popular material for dental restorations because of its resemblance to real teeth.
The Dental Implant Installation Process
The Free Consultation & Supplemental Surgery
First, Dr. Grivas will deeply clean your teeth and gums. then, Dr. Grivas will take CT scans to evaluate your jawbone density & ensure that you’re a good candidate for dental implant surgery. Depending on the results of your scans, underlying issues may require treatment with supplemental procedures before dental implant surgery can take place. After any necessary, supplemental procedures are conducted, we’ll schedule your first dental implant appointment.
The First Appointment
We’ll use a local anesthetic to ensure that your dental implant procedure is painless. We also offer sedation options to make the procedure more comfortable for patients with dental anxiety. Once we’ve ensured that you’re comfortable and won’t feel any pain, Dr. Grivas will make incisions in your gums to expose your jawbone. The titanium fixtures will be placed into these incisions and implanted in the jawbone. The incisions are then sealed.
The Second Appointment
You’ll return for your second appointment once your gums have healed and sufficient osseointegration has taken place. This process usually takes three to six months. During your second appointment, your permanent dental restorations will be attached to your implant by the abutment.
Why Dental Implants?
There are many factors that make dental implants worth the extra time and expense. Especially when compared to traditional dentures, dental implants offer more:
- Durability
- Functionality
- Resemblance to real teeth
- Lasting performance
